Self Esteem

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. To make up for it I thought that I would write a collection of posts on Self Esteem. So here goes.........

Self Esteem = Image

In this series about Self Image, I am going to talk about three different things that affect our self image as well as the image that people have of us. The three things are Looks, Friends, and Possessions.

Our Look says so much about us.We can tell by someone's Look if they are rich, poor, smart, athletic, self centred, others centred, etc. We can also tell what is important to that person by what they look like. After all what we put on the outside reflects what is on the inside.

But what does all this have to do with self esteem you might ask? Well, our look affects what we think of ourselves through what others think of us. As people we do value other peoples opinion. Even when we think that we don't. We subconsciously yearn for affirmation. We yearn to be told that we look nice. How we dress is an extension of our attitude, it reflects our state of mind.

When someone tells us that we don't look nice we feel that they are telling us that
our whole attitude is wrong. That we are ugly on the inside. Which makes us fell poorly about ourselves.

Looks also affect the way we picture ourselves. When someone that is dressed differently from us gets a complement we start to second guess everything about ourselves. We wonder if our whole being is good enough. So Looks affect our self esteem because they mirror what we are like on the inside. When we get complemented, or not, it is not only effecting the way that we think of our image it also effects the way that we think of ourselves.

But thankfully no matter what we look like or what others think of us we can know that God loves us.

Verses in the Bible encourage us. Such as this one in 1 Samuel 16:7, "...The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

It also says in 1 Peter 3:3-4, "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight."

More to come...

Thanks and GOD Bless!!!!
